The Silver Panda

Brilliant uncirculated silver Pandas are one of the most popular and affordable ways to collect Panda Coins. They are large enough (the 10 Yuan 1 oz. coins are 40mm in diameter compared to 32mm for the 1 oz. gold Panda Coins) to make it easy to appreciate the beauty of the design. Another appealing feature of the Pandas is the different design on each year (except 2001 and 2002).

The silver Pandas were also minted in large enough quantities that prices are generally below $100, with many years available for $30-$50. That does not, however, mean that these coins are merely bullion pieces. Several dates from 2000 and earlier are not at all easy to locate. Assembling a collection of high-grade Pandas can also be a challenge, as some strikes are decidedly better than others. These factors makes collecting the entire run of silver Pandas quite interesting and suggests that prices may continue to appreciate as more collectors discover this lovely series.

Besides the 1 ounce silver BU Pandas, the Chinese Mint has released silver proof Pandas in 1/2 oz., 1 oz., 5 oz., 12 oz. and kilogram (32.15 oz.) sizes.

Notes:

There are several different figures for mintages that have been published. Record keeping at the Chinese Mint in its earlier years seems to have been somewhat haphazard. Therefore the numbers shown here should be considered as guides rather than exact mintages.

Average prices are based on completed online auctions during October-November 2008. Prices are for uncirculated coins. Certified coin prices prices are noted, if any sales took place. Dealer prices may be higher than auction sales, but keep in mind that dealers include assurances of authenticity and/or grade that may not be available from online sellers.
